Delaware 2 vs. Temple 0

Delaware 4 vs. Temple 3

The University of Delaware softball team improved to

5-3 on the season with a sweep in the home opener against Temple

University (3-15).

The Hens used outstanding pitching and timely hitting to take the

victories. Delaware won the first end of the doubleheader 2-0 and

completed the sweep with a 4-3 victory in the second end.

Each team was held scoreless in the first game until the bottom of

the fourth inning. The Hens used a walk and back-to-back singles

to set up the first run which was scored by Lauren Mark, who

capitalized on an error by the first baseman. The Hens left two

runners on in the fourth. After a Jen Klusanitz double to start

the fifth, Blue Hen pitcher Krysta Pidstawski retired the next

eight Owls and Delaware made the game, 2-0, when Lauren Mark scored

on a Robin Zielinski single.

Pidstawski pitched her third complete game and second shutout of

the season to take the victory. She allowed only four hits while

striking out seven. Nanci Lima took the loss for the Owls.

Temple jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the second game. The

Hens responded with three runs in the second inning. The rally

started with a Lauren Mark single. Robin Zielinski and Rikki

Greenstreet each followed with single. Mark scored when the

catcher threw the ball away trying to pick Mark off third base.

The Hens scored twice once on a Carolyn Wasilewski rbi single and

again on an error by the catcher to make the game 3-1.

The Owls responded quickly with two runs in the top of the third on

a Katie Spencer triple. Neither team could generate any offense

until the bottom of the seventh, when pinch-hitter Amanda Cariello

singled. Cariello was taken out for a pitch-runner who advanced to

third on back-to-back sacrifice bunts and scored when the Temple

first baseman could not get the ball into her glove for the last

out of the inning and Delaware won 4-3.
