of Delaware Defeats Hofstra 3-0 in
Breathtaking Fashion to Continue Home Win

NEWARK, DE
(Sept. 29, 2004) -- The University of
Delaware Volleyball team opened Colonial
Athletic Association play by defeating
Hofstra University, 3-0 (30-26, 30-28,
32-30) Wednesday night on Barbara Viera
Court for the first time in 11 matches
spanning six seasons.
Delaware
came from behind in games two and three
from deficits of six and four
respectively. The win extends the Hens'
home winning streak to five games as
Delaware opens the season 11-3 for the
first time since 1981.
Claire
McCormack (Downers Grove, IL/Downers Grove
South-below) led Delaware's attack
tallying 18 kills on the night as Allison
Lutz (Burnsville, MN/Burnsville) posted 46
assists and one key kill that began the
Hens' six point comeback in game two.
Sarah Engle (Yorba Linda,
CA/Esperanza-right) and Colleen Walsh
(Cleveland, OH/Regina) each recorded nine
kills as libero Taylor Govaars (Balboa,
CA/Newport Harbor) posted 25
digs.
 Niecy
Taylor (Albuqueque, NM/Cibola) had a solid
night at the net, posting five assisted
blocks and one solo. Serving specialist
Erin Kardine (Newark, DE/Padua Academy)
joined the floor for Delaware to serve for
both the go-ahead and match-winning point
for the Hens in game three.
Senior
Valerie Murphy (Round Hill, VA/Loudoun
Valley), who was honored prior to the game
for recording her 1,000th kill against
Rider last weekend, posted eight kills and
one solo block hitting for .200. She is
now the second person on the Delaware
squad to pass a 1,000 milestone this
season. Govaars reached 1,000 digs at the
Cal-State Fullerton Tournament during the
season opener against Texas
State.
For the
Pride (9-6, 0-1 CAA), Beverly Rivera
posted a career high 14 kills while
Shellane Ogoshi recorded 36 assists and 19
digs and Catherine Durakis tallied 18
digs.
Delaware,
which is now 11-3 on the season, will face
William & Mary on Viera Court on
Friday, October 2 at 7 p.m.
