University of Delaware Volleyball Defeats Temple To Win Fourth Straight

NEWARK, DE (Sept. 14, 2004) -- The University of Delaware volleyball team relied on the arms of Claire McCormack (Downers Grove, IL/Downers Grove South) and Colleen Walsh (Cleveland, OH/Regina) to muscle it out over Temple for a 3-1 non-league win Tuesday night at Barbara Viera Court.

Delaware, which won its fourth straight game to improve to 5-2 on the season, lost the first game but came back to win three straight games for the 26-30, 30-22, 30-14, 30-27 victory.

The win improves Delaware to 5-2 on the season as the Owl's fall to 2-5.

Walsh, a freshman, led the Hens in kills with a season high 23, completing the four-game match with a .452 hitting percentage and 24 points. McCormack finished with a double-double, recording 22 kills and 22 digs. Allison Lutz (Burnsville, MN/Burnsville) recorded 58 assists on the night while Taylor Govaars (Balboa, CA/Newport Harbor) finished with 25 digs.

Valerie Murphy (Round Hill, VA/Loudoun Valley) moved into Delaware's top 10 list for career blocks during the game, upping her career total to 221 to surpass Rebecca Colenda (1994-1997).

For the Owls, Zhen Jea Liu led the attack, posting 19 kills, followed by Yue Liu with 13. Ying Sun Ling led the team in digs with 21 and Allison Runk led them in assists with 43.

The Blue Hens travel to Marist September 17-18 to participate in the Marist Tournament. The first match will be against Brown on Friday, September 17, at 10 a.m.
