Towson Defeats Delaware, 3-0, To Win CAA Volleyball Tournament Championship

TOWSON, MD (November 21, 2004) -- April Hoffman recorded 13 kills while Sarah Miller added eight kills and a team-high 12 digs as the Towson University volleyball team won the Colonial Athletic Association championship by defeating the University of Delaware, 3-0, in the final Sunday night at the Towson Center.

The Tigers won by game scores of 30-18, 30-28, and 30-22 to improve to 24-7 and advance to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1994. Delaware, which was making its sixth appearance in a conference tournament final, fell to 23-9 and was denied what would have been the first NCAA Tournament berth in school history.

Liz Goubeaux, who recorded seven kills and added four digs and four blocks for the Tigers, was named the tournament's Most Outsanding Performer and was joined on the all-tournament team by teammates Mary Clare Coghlan and Hoffman, seniors Taylor Govaars (Balboa, CA/Newport Harbor) and Valerie Murphy (Round Hill, VA/Loudoun Valley) -above- of Delaware, Jessica Umansky of George Mason, and Shellane Ogoshi of Hofstra.

Coghlan finished with five kills and 40 assists for Towson, which won its 10th straight match and remained undefeated at home this season.

Murphy led Delaware, which had swept Hofstra in Saturday's semifinals, with a team-high 13 kills, while senior Sarah Engle (Yorba Linda, CA/Esperanza) added nine kills and seven digs. Govaars tallied a team-best 12 digs for the Blue Hens, while junior Niecy Taylor (Albuquerque, NM/Cibola) had eight kills and four blocks. Freshman Megan Welch (Yorba Linda, CA/Esperanza) added 25 assists and eight digs, while sophomore Claire McCormack (Downers Grove, IL/Downers Grove South) recorded seven kills and five digs.

Delaware's 23 victories are the most in a season since the 1997 team also won 23 matches, while the nine losses are the fewest since the 1977 team went 38-8 in just the program's sixth year of existence.
