Blue Hens Win Home Debut For Elliott

Jennifer Wanner had 9 of Delaware's record 19 service aces

NEWARK, DE -- Cameo Neeman (Ursuline HS) recorded a game-high 20 kills, Jennifer Wanner ( Conestoga Valley/Akron, PA) added 19 kills, and Margaret Lapinski (Brandywine HS) chipped in with 17 kills and 15 digs as the University of Delaware volleyball team snapped an eight-game losing streak and gave rookie head coach Shannon Elliott a win in her home debut with a 3-2 win over Villanova Wednesday night at Viera Court.

The Blue Hens (3-8), whose eight-game losing streak had tied a UD record, took the first two games of the match but had to hold on for the five-set victory. The Hens downed Villanova 15-7, 15-7, 11-15, 11-5, 17-15, defeating the Wildcats (3-9) for the first time since 1993 after eight straight losses. The Hens had entered the match having also lost 16 straight games.

Delaware was down by two points twice in the final game, trailing 10-8 at one point, before rallying for the victory. The Blue Hens got the game-winner on a kill from Heather Ness.

"This was breathtaking," said Elliott, the former All-State selection at Wilmington's Ursuline Academy of the win in her home debut. "This gives our team such a huge lift after struggling the last few weeks. It was nice to win this first game at home and show our fans that we really do have a good team. We (the coaching staff) believed and we were confident we could pull that final game out. It took the team to play threw it and deliver. It was a great win."

Delaware set a school record with 19 services aces in the 2000 home debut, surpassing the record of 17 set vs. Loyola in 1994. Wanner recorded nine aces, one shy of the school record 10 set by Pam Chorley vs. Lehigh in 1980. Delaware freshman Allison Hunter (Layton/Sandy, UT) also got into the act, setting a UD freshman record with 60 assists.

Tina Zitterich led Villanova with 19 kills while Breen Eddinger and Leah Mathews each had 14. Jennifer Edwards dished out 55 assists.

The Hens return to action this weekend when they host the annual Delaware/Asics Invitational at Viera Court. Action begins Friday at 5 p.m. and continues Saturday at 10 a.m. The Hens will host Morgan State, Lafayette, and Liberty in the four-team tournament.
