George Mason 3, Delaware 2 November 17, 2001 Blue Hens Fall Just Short of Upset vs. George Mason
FAIRFAX, VA -- The University of Delaware volleyball team's unlikely run to the Colonial Athletic Association title fell just short Saturday evening as host and No. 1 seed George Mason overcame a two-game deficit to post a 3-2 victory over the Blue Hens in the CAA semifinals. No. 4 seed Delaware (10-16), which won seven of its last 11 matches this season after a 3-12 start, won the first two games by scores of 30-28 and 30-24 before the Patriots rallied with wins of 30-22, 30-22, and 15-10 to advance to the finals Sunday afternoon. George Mason (18-6), which lost just just one of 12 league matches during the season, including wins of 3-0 and 3-1 over Delaware, will face the winner of Saturday's Hofstra vs. William & Mary semifinal game Sunday at 3 p.m. in the league title match. The winner will advance to the NCAA Tournament. "This has been a very exciting and fun few weeks for me," said Delaware interim head coach Sue Stauffer, who led the Hens to a 3-2 record after head coach Shannon Elliott resigned in late October. "I was pleased to find a team with such unity and a desire to excel. This is a talented team that really took off and finished the season on a strong note." Once again leading the Blue Hens was senior Cameo Neeman (Ursuline/Wilmington, DE) who finished with a team-high 23 kills to go with eight digs and five block assists. She had seven kills in the game two victory. Also for the Hens, Sara Kearns (St. Mark's/Newark, DE) had 15 kills, including eight in the first game, while Valerie Murphy (Loudoun Valley/Round Hill, VA) had 11 kills and four blocks and setter Allison Hunter contributed 51 assists, six digs, and four blocks. Four George Mason reached double figures in kills as Aline Pereira notched a team-high 23 kills to go with 17 digs, Natalia Torres-Tirado added 19 kills and nine digs, Jill Pearson had 14 kills and four blocks, and Shalen Reed contributed 11 kills and 11 digs.
