Blue Hens Win First Match of Season with CAA Victory over Drexel

NEWARK, DE -- The University of Delaware volleyball team rallied from a two games to one deficit to defeat the Drexel Dragons Saturday night, 3-2, at Viera Court at the Carpenter Sports Building in Colonial Athletic Association action.

Delaware defeated Drexel, 30-28, in game one before the Dragons won games two and three, 30-25 and 30-22, respectively. Trailing 23-18 in the fourth game, the Blue Hens rallied for a 31-29 win before knocking off Drexel 15-8 in the fifth and decisive game.

Sophomore Valerie Murphy (Round Hill, VA/Loudon Valley) led Delaware with 19 kills and three blocks, while freshman Jennifer Daniels (Lakewood, CA/St. Joseph's) registered 14 kills for the Blue Hens, who defeated Drexel for the seventh consecutive time. Sophomore Sarah Engle (Yorba Linda, CA/Esperanza), who was moved to setter in the fourth game, sparked the Blue Hens and finished with 13 kills, 19 assists and six blocks.

Jenny Gorecki posted 16 kills for Drexel, while Angela Tassone notched 14.

The Blue Hens return to action next Saturday, September 21, when they travel to Virginia to take on CAA foe William & Mary. Match time is set for 5 p.m.
