Mason Tops Delaware 3-1 to Clinch CAA
Tournament Berth; Hens Gain No. 3

FAIRFAX,
VA (November 13, 2004) -- The University
of Delaware won the first game but host
George Mason came back to capture the
final three games and post a 3-1 Colonial
Athletic Association volleyball victory
over the Blue Hens Saturday night at Linn
Memorial Gym, clinching the fourth and
final spot in next week's conference
tournament.
The Blue
Hens, who lost their second straight
match, finished the regular season with a
22-8 record and a 9-5 slate in conference
play to place third in the league
standings. The Hens, whose 22 wins are the
most since 1997, will be the No. 3 seed
and take on No. 2 seed Hofstra in the CAA
semifinals this Saturday, Nov. 20 at 7:30
p.m. at Towson University. Top seed Towson
will take on No. 4 George Mason (14-9, 8-6
CAA) in the other semifinal game at 5 p.m.
The championship game will be held Nov. 21
at 5 p.m. with the winner earning an
automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament.
Delaware
won the first game Saturday night by a
score of 30-28, but the Patriots came back
to capture the victory by winning by
scores of 30-27, 30-20, and 30-25. George
Mason avenged a 3-2 loss to the Hens Oct.
15 in Newark.
Sarah
Engle (right) led Delaware with 19 kills
and 17 digs, hitting .326 for the match
and converting on 14 of her first 22
attacks. Valerie Murphy recorded 10 kills,
four digs, and three blocks, Allison Lutz
dished out 30 assists and had 12 digs, and
Taylor Govaars notched a team-high 19
digs. The Hens hit just .090 for the
match.
Natalia
Porosa led George Mason with 17 kills, 12
digs, and five block assists while Niki
Bernardes posted 13 kills and 11 digs, and
Chantal Bodkin-Clarke chipped in with 12
kills and a match-high nine blocks. Jesica
Umansky added 52 assists and Zulma Rojas
recorded 21 digs. George Mason hit .213
for the match and had 16 team blocks.
