Delaware Volleyball Drops 3-2 Heartbreaker to Central Connecticut State

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (Sept. 18, 2004)-- The University of Delaware volleyball team rallied from a two-game deficit before falling in the fifth game, 15-13, to Central Connecticut State in the second day of the Marist Tournament Saturday afternoon at the McCann Center.

The Blue Devils defeated the Blue Hens, 3-2 (30-22, 30-24, 27-30, 26-30, 15-13), to snap Delaware's seven-match winning streak. Despite the loss, the Blue Hens' 7-3 start is their best since the 1995 team also opened its season with a 7-3 mark.

Valerie Murphy and Sarah Engle were named to the All-Tournament Team for the Blue Hens.

Jennifer Cote led Central Connecticut with a team-high 20 kills and a .567 hitting percentage, while Brynn Good posted a team-best 49 assists and 28 digs.

Delaware sophomore outside hitter Claire McCormack (Downers Grove, IL/Downers Grove - right) led the Blue Hens with 22 kills and 19 digs, while Murphy (Round Hill, VA/Loudon Valley) added 11 kills and six block assists. Freshman setter Allison Lutz (Burnsville, MN/Burnsville) recorded 54 assists and 11 digs and junior libero Taylor Govaars (Balboa, CA/Newport Harbor) finished second on the team with 18 digs.

Junior middle hitter Niecy Taylor (Albuquerque, NM/Cibola) had nine kills and just three errors for a team-high .353 hitting percentage, while senior right side hitter Sarah Engle (Yorba Linda, CA/Esperanza) added eight kills for Delaware.

The Blue Hens will be back in action next Friday and Saturday at the Rider Tournament. Delaware will face Seton Hall Friday at 7 p.m., and on Saturday will take on Rider at 11 a.m. and Princeton at 3 p.m.
