DE -- The University of Delaware
volleyball squad picked up two decisive
victories on the first day of their own
Delaware Invitational Friday, defeating
University at Albany 3-1 in the afternoon
and the University of New Mexico 3-0 in
the evening at Barbara Viera Court.
In
the other two matches, New Mexico defeated
George Washington 3-1 and Albany downed
George Washington 3-1. The second and
final day of the tournament will begin
Saturday at 12 noon with Albany taking on
New Mexico followed by the 2 p.m. match
between Delaware and George Washington. A
victory by the Blue Hens will give them
the tournament title. Delaware has
captured the tournament title four other
teams, the most recent in 1997. This year
marks the 28th season that the tournament
has been held despite returning from a
two-year hiatus this year.
Delaware,
which extended its winning streak to three
matches, improved to 3-2 on the season
while New Mexico moved to 3-2, Albany
moved to 2-4, and George Washington fell
to 0-6 on the season.
The
Blue Hens downed Albany 30-24, 29-31,
30-26, 30-26 as Claire McCormack recorded
14 kills and 13 digs, Valerie Murphy added
a match-high 17 kills, and Allison Lutz
dished out 54 assists. The Blue Hens
recorded 11 service aces for the match.
Shelby Goldman led Albany with 16 kills
while Ashley DeNeal had 14 kills and 11
digs.
In
Delaware's second game, the Blue Hens hit
.398 for the match to just .212 for the
Lobos. Four Blue Hens recorded 10 or more
kills as McCormack had 14 to go with nine
digs, New Mexico native Niecy Taylor added
11 kills, and Murphy and Colleen Walsh
each chipped in with 10 kills. Lutz added
45 assists for the match. New Mexico was
led by Kelly Therkelsen's nine kills.
In
the other matches Friday, New Mexico
downed George Washington 33-30, 30-17,
26-30, 30-25 as Therkelsen recorded 25
kills and Nicole Ryan added 15 kills.
Julienne McLaughlin had 15 kills for the
Colonials. In the other match, Albany
downed George Washington 30-11, 24-30,
30-24, 30-23 as Goldman had 16 kills and
Ashlee Reed added 14 kills and 18 digs.
McLaughlin had a match-high 21 kills for
GWU.
