Blue
Hen Volleyball Rallies to Win Eighth
Straight Match Behind Murphy's 17
Kills
DATE:
October 8, 2004
RICHMOND,
VA -- Valerie Murphy (right) recorded 17
kills, hit. 517, and added six block
assists and Colleen Walsh and Nicole Stuka
each chipped in with 12 kills as the
University of Delaware extended its
winning streak to eight matches with a 3-1
Colonial Athletic Association women's
volleyball victory over host Virginia
Commonwealth Friday night at the Siegel
Center.
The Blue
Hens (15-3, 4-0 CAA) hit .250 for the
match and recorded 13 blocks on the way to
their eighth win, the longest winning
streak by Delaware since an eight-game win
streak in 1996. The Hens have now won 15
of their last 16 games and their 4-0 start
in league play matches the team's best
conference start since beginning 4-0 in
1996. Delaware's 15-3 start is the best
since 1980 and the 15 wins in a season is
the most for the Hens since the 2000
season.
Virginia
Commonwealth (4-12, 0-4 CAA) remained
winless in conference play despite a
match-high 20 kills from Rachel Chapin and
10 kills from Irina Belozyorova. Chapin
also added 10 digs. The Rams hit just .106
for the match.
The Rams
won the first game by a score of 30-22 but
the Blue Hens rallied back, edging VCU
30-26 in the second game and posting
dominating wins of 30-20 and 30-16 in the
last two games.
Sarah
Engle added nine kills and 11 digs for the
Blue Hens while Taylor Govaars chipped in
with a team-high 23 digs and Allison Lutz
dished out 45 assists. Niecy Taylor also
registered four kills, four blocks, and
three block assists.
The Blue
Hens continue action Saturday at James
Madison at 7 p.m. Should the Hens down the
Dukes, they would post the best 19-game
start in school history.
