Delaware Volleyball Outlasts William & Mary 3-2 to Claim Fifth Straight Win

NEWARK, DE -- Delaware scored seven straight points to overcome an 8-6 deficit in the fifth and final game and moved on to a thrilling 3-2 Colonial Athletic Association women's volleyball victory over William & Mary Friday night at Barbara Viera Court.

The Blue Hens, who rolled to their fifth straight win, improved to 12-3 (2-0 CAA) as Valerie Murphy (#8 at right) and Sarah Engle each recorded a team-high 18 kills and Engle and Nicole Stuka recorded double-doubles. William & Mary, which got 20 kills from Mandy Mayo, fell to 9-6 (1-1 CAA).

Delaware, off to its best start since the 1981 season, improved to 2-0 in league play for the first time since a 4-0 start in 1996, won by scores of 30-26, 30-32, 30-27, 26-30, 15-13.

Murphy led the way with 18 kills and a .371 hitting percentage while Engle recorded 18 kills and 14 digs, Stuka added 16 kills and 14 digs, Colleen Walsh chipped in with 12 kills, Allison Lutz handed out 60 assists to go with 14 digs, and Taylor Govaars added 29 digs.

Megan Eisenman added 14 kills and Sarah Long and Kate Woffindin each had 10 kills to pace the Tribe.

The two teams split the first four games with Delaware winning the first game 30-26 and third game 30-27. William & Mary sent the match into a fifth game with a 30-26 victory in game four.

The Tribe took an 8-6 lead in the fifth game but Delaware rallied with seven consecutive points, taking advantage of three Tribe attack errors and a service ace by Lutz to go up 13-8. The Hens went up 14-10 on a kill by Niecy Taylor but William & Mary scored the next three points, two by Mayo, to cut the margin to one. Delaware clinched the win on a kill by Walsh.
