 NEWARK, DE -- Carol Mattos recorded a double-double of 15 kills and 18 digs to lead league newcomer Georgia State to a 3-1 (24-30, 24-30, 30-28, 29-31) win over the University of Delaware volleyball squad in the Colonial Athletic Association opener for both teams at Barbara Viera Court Friday evening.
Junior Heather Ranck, who is ranked 29th in NCAA Division I in digs per game, led the Blue Hens with 26 digs, while sophomore Colleen Walsh recorded a double-double of 14 kills and 10 digs. Appearing in her first collegiate game, freshman Clar Farwell posted 11 kills, while fellow classmate Kelly Gibson added nine kills and 10 digs.
It was also learned tonight that Delaware senior co-captain Niecy Taylor will sit out the next four to six weeks with a high-ankle sprain that she suffered earlier this week in practice.
In the first-ever meeting between the two teams, Alex Blenche and Michelle Trimble each posted 14 kills for the Panthers, while Christen Garcia recorded 16 digs.
Delaware drops to 2-6 (0-1 CAA), while Georgia State improves to 1-5 (1-0 CAA) on the year.
The Blue Hens will be back in action Saturday, September 10 to host Colonial Athletic Association opponent UNC Wilmington for a
2 p.m. match at Viera Court.
