Pittsburgh Defeats Delaware, 3-0, on First Day of Delaware Volleyball Invitational

NEWARK, DE -- Diana Andreyko posted a game high 17 kills while Gini Ullery added 13 as the University of Pittsburgh volleyball team spoiled the University of Delaware’s season opener Friday by defeating the Blue Hens 3-0 on the first day of the Asics/Delaware Invitational.

The Panthers won by game scores of 37-35, 30-16 and 30-24, while the University of San Francisco defeated the University of New Hampshire 3-0, with game scores of 30-18, 30-16, and 30-14 in the first match of the day.

Colleen Walsh, an All-CAA Rookie Team selection last year, led the Blue Hens with 14 kills, while Heather Ranck added a team high 15 digs. Megan Welch led Delaware with 33 assists and was second on the team with 10 digs, while Megan McGrath had eight kills and just one error to hit .538 for the match.

Niecy Taylor had eight kills, while freshman Molly Rand added six in her Blue Hen debut. Azadeh Boroumand led the Panthers with 46 assists, while Megan McGrane had a team high 18 digs.

The meeting was the first since 1980 between Pittsburgh and Delaware, which advanced to the CAA Tournament final a year ago.

The invitational continues Saturday with four matches, beginning at 11 a.m. when San Francisco takes on Pittsburgh. Delaware faces New Hampshire at 1 p.m., while New Hampshire faces Pittsburgh at 4:30 p.m. and Delaware hosts San Francisco at 7 p.m.
