  Blue Hen Volleyball Defeats Seton Hall and Texas-Arlington to Capture Delaware Invitational Title

NEWARK, DE -- Junior Colleen Walsh posted a game-high 28 kills and added five digsathlete photo to lead the University of Delaware volleyball team to a 3-1 (30-18, 27-30, 31-29, 30-22) win over Texas-Arlington Saturday evening at Barbara Viera Court on the final day of the ASCIS/Delaware Invitational.

Both the Hens and the Mavericks won their earlier matches to set up the championship match between the only undefeated teams in the tournament. The Mavericks defeated Marist (30-26, 30-21, 30-16) while the Hens defeated Seton Hall (30-25, 23-30, 30-28, 32-30) in one of the tournament’s most exciting matches.

For the Blue Hens, Gibson recored a game-high 21 kills versus the Pirates to go along with 17 in the championship game. Walsh tallied 17 kills and freshman Michelle LaLonde added 12 kills and eight digs against the Pirates.

Senior Heather Ranck posted her 1,000 career dig during the match versus Seton Hall and had a team high 60 digs during the tournament.

Junior Megan Welch (right) had an outstanding tournament, recording 159 assists which garnered her Most Valuable Player honors. The award, along with the all-tournament team, was voted on by the participating coaches.

All-tournament team members included Welch, Gibson and Walsh from the Hens to go along with Emily Nedderman, Teena Sobczak, and Ellen Murray from Texas-Arlington and Kelly Widders from Seton Hall.

Delaware will be back in action Tuesday when it faces Temple at Viera Court at 7 p.m..
