Blue Hen Volleyball Defeats Drake and Wisconsin-Green Bay to Capture UWGB Tournament Title

athlete photoGreen Bay WI: -- The University of Delaware volleyball team continued its stellar play as it defeated Drake, 3-0 (30-18, 30-26, 30-27) and Wisconsin-Green Bay, 3-1 (29-31, 30-22, 30-27, 30-19) to capture the 2006 UWGB Tournament Title Saturday.

The Hens, who improved to 7-0, are tied for their best start in the history of the program, matching the 1976 team which also started 7-0.

Sophomore Sue Wiker (right) posted a career-high 14 kills to lead Delaware past Drake in three games Saturday afternoon in its second game of the tournament. Sophomore Kelly Gibson had another excellent match, posting 13 kills and 13 digs.

Megan Veltman led the way for Drake with a team-high 14 kills while Chelsea Lauersdorf posted a team-high 22 assists.

The win was the 400th career victory for Delaware head coach Bonnie Kenny.

In the chamionship match the Hens fell behind for the first time all season by losing the first game 31-29. However, UD bounced back and won the final three games to capture its second tournament title on the year.

Gibson once again led the Hens in the championship game, tallying a game-high 21 kills to go along with 21 digs. Junior setter Megan Welch had another productive day by posting 91 assists in the two matches.

Sarah Rauen recorded 13 kills and 12 digs for Wisconsin-Green Bay, which fell to 3-3 on the year.

Three Blue Hens were named to the All-Tournament Team: freshman Michelle LaLonde, senior Heather Ranck, and Gibson, who was named the Tournament's Most Valuable Player.

The Hens will return to action Tuesday when they travel to UMBC. Game time is 6 p.m.
