NEW ORLEANS, LA -- In a record-setting performance, the University of Delaware volleyball team extended its winning streak to five games after dominating Alcorn State, 3-0 (30-6, 30-10, 30-14), at the Four Points at Sheraton Invitational in New Orleans.
The 30 total points surrendered by the Hens were the fewest allowed since rally scoring was implemented in 2001. The Tigers’ six points in the first game were the lowest total by a Delaware opponent since Maryland-Eastern Shore also recorded six on September 4, 2001.
During the match, Delaware recorded 22 service aces, which set a new school record. Freshman Jess Chason (at right), making only the second appearance of her career, recorded a team-high six aces and added 11 assists.
The Hens’ .500 team hitting percentage also tied the second highest single-match rate in Delaware history and the highest since the scoring change six years ago.
Colleen Walsh led Delaware with a game-high 12 kills and added four service aces. Paige Erickson, Michelle LaLonde, Heather Lively, and Katie Dennehy balanced out the attack with seven kills apiece.
Megan Welch also added a game-high 29 assists, while Stephanie Barry chipped in with 11 digs for the Hens.
With the win, the Delaware volleyball team improved to 5-0 for just the third time in team history. Last season, they started 12-0, while they began the 1981 season with a six-game winning streak.
The Blue Hens return to action tomorrow for a day-night doubleheader against Nicholls State at 10 a.m. and New Orleans at 7 p.m during the final day of the New Orleans Invitational.
