Volleyball Wins Caravelle Resort Invitational After Beating Coastal Carolina, 3-0

CONWAY, SC -- The University of Delaware volleyball team captured the Caravelle Resort Invitational championship after downing Coastal Carolina, 3-0 (31-29, 30-20, 30-26), in the title match on Saturday afternoon.

The Hens (13-2) were led by Megan Welch (at right), who was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player, after recording her third straight double-double with 45 assists and 10 digs

For the tournament, Welch posted a team-high 140 assists. She was also second on the team with 33 digs.

Freshman Katie Dennehy and sophomore Stephanie Barry also earned All-Tournament honors for the Hens. Dennehy finished the invitational with 36 kills and eight blocks, including 12 kills and three blocks in the championship match.

For Barry, it was her fourth All-Tournament selection this season after she was named to the All-Invitational squads for the Delaware, New Orleans, and Miami Tournaments earlier this year.

Barry posted a tournament-high 62 digs with 23 coming against Coastal Carolina. During the two-day tournament, she also added four service aces and three assists.

In the title bout, Kelly Gibson posted her second double-double on the season with 13 kills and 10 digs. Colleen Walsh led the Hens with 14 kills, while Michelle LaLonde added 11 kills and three blocks.

Coastal Carolina was led by Megan Bickford who posted 11 kills. Brett Starbuck added 23 digs for the Chanticleers.

In the tournament, the Hens recorded a .330 attack percentage, which was over three times higher than their opponents' .105 mark. LaLonde led Delaware with a .500 percentage during the three games.

Delaware’s 13 wins have now come against teams from thirteen different conferences.

The Blue Hens return to action on Wednesday at 7 p.m. when they face Towson for the conference opener in Newark.
