PHILADELPHIA, PA -- The University of Delaware volleyball team continued its winning ways in a 3-2 (30-25, 30-22, 28-30, 27-30, 15-12) victory against Temple at McGonigle Hall on Tuesday night.
Sophomore Michelle LaLonde (at right) led the Hens, recording 21 kills, including four in the fifth and decisive game. Co-Captain Colleen Walsh also added 21 kills, five digs, and two blocks.
The Hens (4-0) extended their consecutive game-winning streak to 11 after capturing the first two games of the contest. That tied the longest winning streak since Delaware won 12 in a row from October 25-November 1, 1996.
After the Owls (2-3) snapped the winning streak and forced a fifth game, Delaware jumped out to a 5-0 lead. Temple rallied to tie the score at 10, but the Hens proved to be too much, capturing five of the last seven points.
Reigning CAA Co-Player of the Week Stephanie Barry continued to impress, recording 24 digs and three service aces. Molly Rand finished with 14 digs and eight kills, while Megan Welch tallied 54 assists and 12 digs.
The Owls were led by Yue Liu, who posted a game-high 27 kills and 11 digs. Yun Yi Zhang also had a solid game, recording 17 kills and 13 digs.
With the win, the Hens have now started 4-0 in consecutive seasons for the first time since the 1980-81 campaigns. Last year, Delaware began the season with a school-record 12 straight wins.
The Blue Hens return to action on Friday at 5 p.m. when they face Alcorn State in the opening round of the University of New Orleans Tournament in Louisianna.
