Blue Hens Open Delaware Invitational with 3-1 Comeback Win over Boston College

NEWARK, DE -- The University of Delaware volleyball team opened its 2007 campaign with a 3-1 (27-30, 30-25, 30-15, 31-29) victory over Boston College onFriday evening during the first day of the Delaware Invitational held at BarbaraViera Court.

After capturing the second two games following the loss in the opener, the Hens found themselves trailing 29-26 in the fourth game. Following a kill by freshman Katie Dennehy, fellow freshman Greta Gibboney served up four straight points to complete the comeback.

The victory was the Hens’ fourth straight in the Delaware Invitational after capturing the 2006 title. It also marked the second all-time victory for the Hens over the Eagles, who previously matched up during the 1995 Early Bird Classic in Rhode Island.

Senior captain Colleen Walsh (at right) led the Hens, recording a game-high 22 kills. With her performance, she moved into sole possession of second place on the all- time career attack attempts list with 3,653.

Megan Welch, the Hens’ senior setter, led Delaware with 46 assists and chipped in with 15 digs. She moved into fourth place on the Hens’ career assists list with 2,585, passing Sadie Bjornstad who recorded 2,571 from 1996-99.

Michelle LaLonde, Delaware’s sophomore middle hitter, also had a strong performance, recording 34 attacks and 16 kills. Dennehy, in her first collegiate appearance, tallied 11 kills, while Stephanie Barry recorded a game-high 36 digs.

In the opening game of the Delaware Invitational, South Carolina defeated Binghamton, 3-0 (32-30, 31-24, 30-16). The Gamecocks were led by Megan Laughlin, who recorded a game-high 11 kills, and Dinelia Concepcion, who had 17 digs.

The Delaware Invitational continues tomorrow with South Carolina taking on Boston College in the first game beginning at 11:00 a.m. Delaware faces off against Binghamton at 1 p.m., followed by Binghamton-Boston College at 5 p.m. Delaware then faces South Carolina in the final match of the tournament, which is slated to start at 7 p.m.
