NEWARK, DE -- The University of Delaware captured its second consecutive Delaware Invitational championship after defeating Binghamton 3-0 (30-24, 30-25, 30-23) on Saturday afternoon and South Carolina 3-0 (30-20, 30-20, 30-28) in the title match at Viera Court on Saturday night.
The Blue Hens were led by sophomore libero Stephanie Barry, who was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player after posting 24 digs to go along with four service aces against the Gamecocks.
For the tournament Barry tallied 93 digs, including back-to-back 30-dig performances against Boston College and Binghamton. She became the first Blue Hen to record consecutive 30-dig matches since Heather Ranck had three straight in 2005.
Colleen Walsh, who was also named to the All-Tournament Team, recorded 17 kills in the championship match and 58 during the entire invitational. Megan Welch also received All-Tournament honors after tallying a game-high 42 assists against South Carolina, which increased her tournament total to 133.
The win was the first ever victory for the Hens against South Carolina, which had previously defeated Delaware in two previous meetings.
The victory also came in head coach Bonnie Kenny’s first game against South Carolina since joining Delaware in 2002. Kenny led the Gamecocks to a 171-137 record during her nine-year stint as South Carolina’s head coach from 1984-92.
Barry led the attack in the first game against the Bearcats, setting a school-record for digs in a three-game match with 33. Walsh added a game-high 19 kills, while Katie Dennehy and Molly Rand added 13 apiece.
During the two-day tournament, the Hens lost their first game to Boston College then won nine straight to win the championship. The Hens also continued their torrid streak in the Delaware Invitational, winning 25 of their last 31 matches dating back to 1995.
In earlier action, South Carolina swept Boston College 3-0 (30-20, 30-19, 30-22). Hannah Lawing led the Gamecock attack, posting nine kills and 13 digs. Dani Bedore added a team-high 10 kills, while Jordan Bradosky had 23 assists.
Boston College also lost to Binghamton 3-0 (30-21, 30-27, 32-30) in the consolation match. After taking the first two games, the Bearcats mounted a comeback in the third frame after trailing, 24-20. Binghamton was led by Michelle McDonough, who served up five straight winners late in the final game to clinch a third place finish for the Bearcats.
Along with Barry, Walsh, and Welch, the All-Invitational team included Megan Laughlin and Dani Bedore from South Carolina as well as Taylor Williams from Boston College and Jacki Kane from Binghamton.
The Blue Hens return to action on Tuesday, August 28th, when they hit the road to face Temple at 7 p.m.
