NEWARK, DE -- The University of Delaware volleyball team capitalized on Colleen Walsh’s record-setting performance by trumping UMBC, 3-0 (30-23, 30-18, 30-24), on Tuesday night for the Hens’ sixth straight victory.

During the contest, Walsh (at right) recorded a match-high 18 kills. With her performance, she set Delaware’s career kills record with 1,562, passing Karen Kunselman who had 1,553 from 1993-96.

Leading 16-13 in the second game, Walsh took a pass from Michelle LaLonde and drilled a shot into the middle of the UMBC defense for the record-setter.

With the win, Delaware has now swept its last five opponents. It is the first time ever that the Hens have recorded five straight 3-0 victories.

The Hens also extended their home winning streak to nine matches dating back to 2006. That streak ties the longest in team history.

In the first game of the match, UMBC battled Delaware to a 22-22 tie. Then, the Hens quickly answered, scoring eight of the last nine points behind the strong serving of co-captains Walsh and Megan Welch.

After the Hens won the second game by a 12-point margin, the Retrievers fought hard in the third frame, pulling within one at 25-24. Once again, Delaware had an answer to the UMBC charge, scoring the last five points behind three kills by Katie Dennehy and two by Kelly Gibson.

Along with Walsh, Delaware (16-2) was led by Megan Welch, who posted 51 assists. Her assist total was the highest by a Hen in a three-game match since Allison Hunter also had 51 against James Madison in 2003.

Gibson also posted her third double-double of the season with 16 kills and 11 digs. Dennehy added 14 kills for the Hens, while Michelle LaLonde had nine kills and a team-high .533 attack percentage.

Stephanie Barry also chipped in with a match-high 27 digs for Delaware.

The Retrievers (12-4) were led by Ashley Oscars, who tallied 12 kills and nine digs. Sabrina Hoeks added 12 digs and eight kills.

UMBC entered the match having won three of its last four meetings with Delaware. However, the Hens now hold a 21-7 advantage in the all-time series.

The Blue Hens return to action on Friday when they travel to Fairfax, VA to take on George Mason at 7 p.m.
