OMAHA, Neb. – One year after becoming the first player in University of Delaware volleyball history to earn All-American honors, junior libero Stephanie Barry duplicated her feat as the Blue Hen standout garnered honorable mention accolades for the second straight season from the American Volleyball Coaches Association.

With the award, Barry is the first player from the Colonial Athletic Association to earn back-to-back All-American honors. Overall, she is just the fourth player from the CAA to garner the national distinction, joining Hofstra’s Elizabeth Curley in 2006 and George Mason’s Aline Pereira in 2003 and Virag Domokos in 1996.

During her junior season, Barry led the Blue Hens to their second straight conference championship and a berth in the NCAA Tournament. Along the way, the Long Beach, California native posted a league-leading 682 digs.

Her dig total marked the third-highest single-season performance in Delaware history. She set the standard last season after finishing with 831.

In 2008, Barry posted at least 25 digs on eight separate occasions, including a season-high 35 against William & Mary on October 3. She also continued to succeed against Delaware’s toughest competition, posting at least 20 digs in matches against Pepperdine, Duke, and Western Michigan. All three teams eventually advanced to the NCAA Tournament, including the Broncos who made it to the Sweet 16.

The award serves as a fitting conclusion to her highly-decorated junior campaign. Last week, she took home first-team All-Region honors for the second straight season. Barry also was once again named the CAA Defensive Specialist of the Year and earned first-team All-Conference honors. Entering the season, she became the first junior in league history to earn Preseason Player of the Year nods as well.

Throughout the year, Barry was selected to three All-Tournament teams before garnering a much-deserved spot on the All-Championship squad during the CAA Tournament. During the conference playoffs, she recorded a team-high 69 digs and fired three aces. She also posted a team-best .971 reception percentage while leading the Hens to the title.

After finishing 12th in the nation in digs-per-set with a 5.33 average as a junior, Barry is one of only five players in the country to finish in the top-15 in that category during each of the last two seasons. As a sophomore, she ranked fourth nationally with a 6.39 mark.

Over the past three seasons, Barry has appeared in all of the team’s 101 matches and 375 sets. She currently holds the program record with a career 4.67 digs-per-set average, while she ranks second all-time in total digs with 1,752. Her total is just 89 shy of Karen Beegle’s career mark set from 1988-91.

Barry is the first female athlete at Delaware to earn back-to-back All-American honors since Liza Shoemaker took home three straight for the women’s lacrosse team from 1996-98. Overall, she is just the ninth Blue Hen to earn national honors in consecutive campaigns.
