RICHMOND, Va. -- Elena Delle Donne has been named the Rookie of the Week in the Colonial Athletic Association for her work during last weekend's College of Charleston Invitational, the CAA office announced today.

Delle Donne (Wilmington, Del. / Ursuline) starred during the team's three matches last week. She helped the Blue Hens sweep Gardner-Webb, 3-0, on Friday before the team suffered two setbacks against Duke and the College of Charleston on Saturday.

During the Tournament, the freshman saw increased action as a middle hitter after junior co-captain Michelle LaLonde missed her second straight week while nursing an Achilles injury. Delle Donne eventually started all three matches and appeared in each of the team's 10 sets.

In her new role, she finished second on the team with nine blocks and tied for second with 23 kills. She also led the Blue Hens with a .364 attack percentage after posting just seven errors on 44 attempts.

After recording seven kills and a team-high five blocks in Delaware's win over Gardner-Webb, she pieced together her finest performance of the season against Duke.

Facing an accomplished team that advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament last season, Delle Donne notched 11 kills against just two errors on 18 attempts for a phenomenal .500 attack percentage. It marked the highest percentage for a Blue Hen with at least 10 kills since Katie Dennehy hit .512 against St. John's last season

The first double-digit kill performance of her career, it also was the first time a Blue Hen recorded 10 or more kills on fewer than 20 swings since Kelly Gibson did it against Gardner-Webb on September 14, 2007.

Elena then capped her week with five kills and one block against the College of Charleston.

On the season, Delle Donne ranks second on the team with 28 blocks, while she is tied for the lead with three solo stops. She is also fourth on the squad with 59 kills and third with a 1.48 kills-per-game average. Her .165 hitting percentage is also the second highest on the team for players with at least 50 kills.

Delle Donne is the second Blue Hen freshman to receive Rookie of the Week honors this season after Kim Stewart earned the award on September 8. It marks the first time since 2006 that Delaware has had two Rookie of the Week selections in the same season.

Along with Delle Donne, the CAA honored William & Mary's Ginny Bray as the Player of the Week.

The Blue Hens will return to action tomorrow at 7 p.m. when they host intrastate rival Delaware State at Viera Court.
