RICHMOND, Va. – Katie Dennehy and Kim Stewart swept the weekly Colonial Athletic Association volleyball honors after Dennehy was selected as the Player of the Week while Stewart earned Rookie of the Week accolades, the CAA office announced today.
The two standouts were honored after leading the University of Delaware volleyball team to a pair of crucial conference victories last weekend. It marks the first time the Blue Hens swept the awards since Colleen Walsh and Kelly Matthias were both honored on September 11, 2006.
For Dennehy (top right), it was her first weekly honor of the season and the second of her career after earning Rookie of the Week nods on October 22 last year. The award is the fourth of the season for Stewart (bottom right), making her the first four-time Rookie of the Week winner in program history.
During the week, Dennehy led the Blue Hens with 28 kills and four aces. She also ranked third on the team with four blocks and fourth with 17 digs.
In the Blue Hens’ 3-0 sweep over the league-leading Northeastern Huskies, Dennehy led the squad with 11 kills and posted two aces. The following night, she added a team-high 17 kills and a pair of aces against Hofstra.
Her 17 kills against the Pride marked her third-best effort of the season. She has also posted at least two aces in seven of the team’s last nine contests.
On the season, the sophomore standout leads Delaware with 333 kills and 33 aces. She also stands third with 44 blocks and fourth with 214 digs.
Stewart continued her incredible freshman campaign last week, finishing second on the team with 22 kills, five blocks, and three aces during the two matches.
In her first contest of the week, she had 10 kills and tied her career-high with four blocks against the Huskies. On Saturday, Stewart came back with 14 digs and 12 kills against the Pride. It marked her third double-double in the last four matches and her sixth on the season.
The only Blue Hen to reach double-figures in kills during each of the last four matches, she currently ranks third on the team with 221 kills. She also stands second with 275 digs and third with 29 aces.
The weekly honors are the eighth and ninth of the season for the Blue Hens. Along with Stewart’s four Rookie of the Week awards, Elena DelleDonne has won three this year. Dennehy joins Stewart as the only Player of the Week selections after the freshman outside hitter won the honor on October 20.
Delaware will wrap up its home slate tomorrow when the team hosts UMBC at 7 p.m. The squad will then conclude its regular season schedule on Saturday when the Blue Hens travel to Towson for a 7 p.m. match-up against the Tigers.
