WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The University of Delaware volleyball team continued its spring action after participating in the Georgetown Invitational on Sunday at the McDonough Arena.

During the day-long event, the Blue Hens went 2-2 against some stiff competition. Along with Delaware and Georgetown, Kansas, Howard, and Loyola all competed at the invitational.

Seven players from last year's Colonial Athletic Association championship team participated in the tournament led by rising seniors Kelly Gibson and Molly Rand. All-American Steph Barry joined Katie Dennehy, Paige Erickson, Jess Chason (at right), and Greta Gibboney to round out the veteran portion of the team. Janeen McCormick, who will be a freshman on the 2008 squad, also appeared for the Hens.

In its first match of the day, Delaware swept Georgetown in two games. Following that, Delaware squared off with Kansas and gave the Jayhawks all they could handle. The match proved to be a good measuring stick for the Hens as KU hails from the powerful Big 12 Conference that saw six teams make the NCAA Tournament last season.

After dropping the first set with Kansas, Delaware rebounded to win the second one and send the match into a tie-breaking third game. Although Delaware eventually lost the 15-point rubber-match, the squad proved that it could hang tough with a team from a top-tier conference.

Following a mid-day break in action, the Hens returned to the court and quickly dropped Howard, 2-0. In the final match of the day, Loyola posted a two-game victory over Delaware to give the Hens a 2-2 overall record.

"We made some good progress during the day, and it was nice to compete again," said head coach Bonnie Kenny. "We learned some important lessons about ourselves today and have some work to do as a team this next week in training. At different times throughout the day we had different individuals rise to the occasion and shine in tough situations. As a team, though, I was disappointed in our lack of competitiveness and ability to gel as a team. That is something we will address."

Combined with its performance during the Army Tournament in March, Delaware finished the regular portion of its spring schedule with a 5-2-1 record.

Next weekend, the Hens will compete in the first-ever collegiate indoor beach competition in Rochester, NY to cap off their spring slate.
