RICHMOND, Va. - Freshman outside hitter Kim Stewart was named the Colonial Athletic Association Rookie of the Week as selected by the conference office.
Stewart, a native of Kentwood, Mich., helped lead the Blue Hens to a 2-1 record and a second-place finish during the Delaware Invitational held at Viera Court last week.
During the team’s three matches, Stewart was the only Blue Hen to record at least 10 digs in every contest. In Delaware’s victories over Syracuse and New Hampshire, she posted 11 digs apiece, while she came back with 10 more in the team’s loss to Michigan State in the championship match.
After seeing a limited role during her first week, she saw more action on the outside during the tournament, posting 12 kills over the weekend. Against the Spartans, who advanced to the Sweet 16 last year, she notched a career-high six kills, including four in the final set.
Earlier in the Tournament, she also led the team with two aces against the Orange, while she added one against the Wildcats.
Overall, she finished second on the team and led all Delaware freshmen with 32 digs and three aces. She also ranked second among all first-year players with 12 kills, while she placed third with three blocks.
On the season, she is one of only two freshmen to appear in all six matches and the only one to see action in each one of the team's 22 sets. She ranks second on the team with 51 digs and fourth with three aces.
Stewart is the first Blue Hen to earn Rookie of the Week honors since Katie Dennehy took home the award on October 22, 2007.
Along with Stewart, Paula McConnell from UNC Wilmington was honored as the CAA Player of the Week.
Delaware will return to action tomorrow at 7 p.m. when the Blue Hens host the Temple Owls at Viera Court.
