RICHMOND, Va. – Junior outside hitter Katie Dennehy has been honored as the Colonial Athletic Association Offensive Player of the Week after helping lead the University of Delaware volleyball team to a 3-0 record last week.
It is the second time this season that Dennehy has earned the honor after also garnering the award on September 21.
During all three contests, the Charlotte, N.C. native led the Blue Hens in kills. She eventually finished the week with a team-high 47, while she also led Delaware with an outstanding .304 hitting percentage.
The highlight of the week came on Friday during an impressive five-set victory over Hofstra in which Dennehy set a new career-high with 24 kills. During the match, she also became the 13th Blue Hen to eclipse the 1,000-kill plateau and the first since Kelly Gibson reached the milestone in 2007.
Her kill total during the match marked the highest by a Blue Hen since Colleen Walsh also had 24 against William & Mary on November 8, 2007. Her total was also tied for the highest by a CAA competitor in a match this season.
Fittingly, her career-best performance against the Pride was bookended by two other strong showings in victories over Villanova and Northeastern. Against the Wildcats on Tuesday, she posted 11 kills and chipped in with seven digs and three blocks, while she added 12 more kills against the Huskies on Saturday.
Her kill total against Northeastern was tied for the highest by a Blue Hen in a three-set match this year. She also hit a team-high .417 during the contest, marking the second best attack percentage by a Hen with at least 12 kills this season.
Dennehy currently leads Delaware with 204 kills, while her 3.29 kills-per-set average is the second highest in the conference. She is also averaging 3.54 points-per-set, which is the fourth best rate in the CAA.
Overall, it is Dennehy’s fourth career weekly honor from the conference. Along with her two awards this year, she was also named the Rookie of the Week on October 22, 2007 and the Player of the Week on November 10, 2008.
Along with Dennehy, the CAA also honored William & Mary’s Lindsey Pflugner as the Defensive Player of the Week, while VCU’s Michala Kvapilova was selected as the top rookie.
Dennehy and the Blue Hens will look to continue their eight-match winning streak when the squad hits the road for a 7 p.m. showdown with UNC Wilmington on Friday.
