NEWARK, DE -- The University of Delaware volleyball team split its two matches Saturday at the Asics Delaware Invitational, defeating New Hampshire, 3-2 (30-18, 30-11, 26-30, 30-32,15-7) and falling to San Francisco, 3-1 (30-25,
30-21, 29-31, 30-21).
In the Blue Hens’ opener against the Wildcats junior Heather Ranck, who was named to the All-Tournament Team, led Delaware with 17 digs, while Colleen Walsh added a team high 16 kills and five aces. Niecy Taylor had 11 kills and
seven blocks, while freshman Kelly Matthias added 12 blocks, fifth most in a match in school history.
Megan Welch had a team high 37 assists, while Molly Rand had eight kills. For New Hampshire, Erin Walker posted 17 kills, while Sarah Rehn recorded team highs of 44 assists and 10 digs.
In the nightcap, Ranck led the Blue Hens with 24 digs, while Taylor added a team high 17 kills. Welch had 26 assists, while Allison Lutz added 23. Megan McGrath had 13 kills for Delaware, with Walsh adding 11.
San Francisco was led by Kristin Hasselberg, who made a team high 16 kills. Brynn Mauer made a team high 19 digs, while Jamie Kartchner led the Dons with 40 assists.
San Francisco won the invitational with a 3-0 record, as the Dons also defeated Pittsburgh, 3-0 (30-20, 31-29, 32-30) in the first match of the day. The Panthers, who defeated New Hampshire, 3-0 (30-9, 30-16, 30-18) later in the
day, finished second with a 2-1 mark, while Delaware was third with a 1-2 record and New Hampshire finished 0-3.
San Francisco’s KeLicia Shorts was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player and was joined on the All-Tournament Team by teammates Hasselberg and Kartchner, Ranck, Pittsburgh’s Diana Andreyko and Megan McGrane, and
New Hampshire’s Walker.
The Blue Hens return to action on September 2-3 with three matches at the Charlotte Invitational.
