March 2, 2000 Blue Hens With 8th Straight; Reach 20 Wins PHILADELPHIA - The University of Delaware women's basketball team cruised to its eighth straight victory and reached the 20-win plateau for the first time in 10 years with a 79-55 America East victory over host Drexel in the final regular season game of the season Thurday night at the Drexel Physical Education Athletic Center. Delaware's junior duo of Cindy Johnson and Danielle Leyfert once again led the way for the Hens (20-7, 13-5) as Johnson recorded 23 points and Leyfert recorded a double-double with 21 points and 10 rebounds. It was Leyfert's 16th career 20-point scoring game. Drexel (9-19, 5-13) shot just 33 percent for the game and lost despite a 20-point, 17-rebound effort from forward Mikki Miller and 12 points off the bench from Bridget Scanlan. The Hens also got 13 points and nine rebounds from Christina Rible, 12 points off the bench from Lindsay Davis, and nine assists from senior guard Christine Koren (Hazleton, Pa. HS) on the way to their eight straight win, all in conference play. The eight straight league wins in America East play builds on a record already set by the Blue Hens. Delaware hit 20 wins for the first time since the 1989-90 team went 21-9 and won the East Coast Conference title. "This was a total team effort, everyone played their roles in what was a big win for us," said Delaware head coach Tina Martin, whose team was 6-21 just two years ago. "Twenty wins is a great tribute to this team. To step and get that amount of wins with all the injuries that we've had is just incredible." With the regular season over, the Hens will now prepare for the America East Championships March 8-11 at the University of Vermont in Burlington. The No. 3 seed Hens will take on No. 6 New Hampshire in the quarterfinals Thursday, March 9. Complete tournament pairings will be announced Friday. Delaware broke away from a close game late in the first half thanks to a 13-2 run that put the Hens up 34-19 at the half. Leyfert scored six of her 12 first half points during the run.
