January 4, 2000 Delaware Ends Win Streak, Falls to Maine 73-58 NEWARK, DE -- The University of Delaware suffered from a tough shooting night and had its five-game win streak snapped with a 73- 58 America East women's basketball setback to Maine Tuesday night at the Bob Carpenter Center. The Blue Hens (8-4, 2-2) hit just 26.7 percent of their shots from the field (20 of 75) and were outrebounded 55-38 in suffering their first home loss of the season, snapping a six-game home winning skein since last season. Maine (6-6, 3-1) won its second straight as reigning America East Player of the Year, center Jamie Cassidy, scored 19 points, pulled 13 rebounds, and blocked four shots. Forward Kizzy Lopez added 14 points and eight rebounds and guard Amy Vachon, America East's all-time assist leader, scored 13 points and dished out 10 assists. Guard Cindy Johnson led all Delaware scorers with 22 points while Megan Dellegrotti fueled a second half Blue Hen comeback and finished with 16 points. The Hens, who lost to Maine for the 14th straight time since 1992-93, also converted just 13 of 28 free throws (.464) for the game. Maine, despite 27 turnovers for the game, jumped out to a 35-20 halftime lead and took its biggest lead at 39-20 three minutes into the second half. Dellegrotti keyed a big UD comeback moments later, scoring nine points in a span of 31 seconds to cut the Maine lead to 39-32 with 15:23 left. The Hens cut the lead to five points at 47-42 with 10:09 left, but the Black Bears answered with 10 straight points to regain some breathing room. The Hens, whose 20 steals was one shy of the school record, made one last run, cutting the Maine cushion to 66-58 with 1:25 left. But Maine again answered, hitting six free throws down the stretch to ice the win.
