University of South Florida Tournament December 3, 1999 TAMPA, FLA. – The University of Delaware women’s basketball team suffered its first setback of the season Friday night as the University of Mississippi swept pass the Blue Hens 90-55 in the first round of the University of South Florida Tournament. Mississippi (5-1) put the four players in double figures led by Becky Myatt’s 17 points on the way to the easy victory. The Blue Hens (3-1), who had started the season out 3-0 for the second straight year, lost despite 18 points from guard Cindy Johnson. The Blue Hens will take on host South Florida in the second and final round of the tournament Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. “Mississippi is obviously a very good basketball team,” said Delaware head coach Tina Martin of a team that plays out of the powerful Southeastern Conference. “We were just physically overmatched tonight. But we’ll get better and we’ll be much improved by the time conference play comes around.” The Lady Rebels connected on 12 of 26 three-pointers, held a commanding 45-31 advantage on the boards, and took advantage of 27 Blue Hen turnovers. Myatt connected on five of eight three-pointers to finish with 17 points while center Frankie Boyd hit on all eight of her shots from the field for 13 points. Delaware guard Cindy Johnson was the Hens’ lone double figure scorer, hitting on 7 of 10 shots from the field for 18 points. Center Suzanne Street pulled a team-high seven rebounds but the Hens’ leading scorer, junior forward Danielle Leyfert, was held scoreless, missing her only two shots from the field in 24 minutes of action. Freshman Christine Cole came off the bench to add eight points to the UD effort. Mississippi jumped out early and never looked back, going up 43-25 at halftime. The Hens were never closer than 20 points the entire second half.
