Lead Blue Hen Comeback; Hens Headed to
Semifinals
BURLINGTON, VT -- The University
of Delaware women's basketball squad advanced to its first
league semifinal appearance since 1993 with a 77-65 victory
over New Hampshire in the America East quarterfinals
Thursday afternoon at the University of Vermont's Patrick
Gymnasium.
The No. 3 seed Blue Hens (21-7), who won
their ninth straight game, got big efforts from junior
forward Danielle Leyfert (Oakton/Vienna, VA) who
scored 26 points and junior guard Cindy Johnson
(August Martin/Far Rockaway, NY) who scored 13 of her 17
points in the second stanza as Delaware rallied from a 34-32
deficit. No. 6 seed New Hampshire, which got 20 points from
all-league center Orsi Farkas, ended its season with a
record of 13-15. Delaware backup 6-4 center Suzanne
Street (Butler/Butler, PA) came off the bench to score
10 points to aid the Blue Hen effort.
The Hens will face Maine (19-9), a 73-52
quarterfinal winner over Boston University Thursday, in the
America East semifinals Friday night at 8 p.m. It will mark
Delaware's first league semifinal appearance since falling
to Vermont in 1993. Should the Hens win that game, they
would advance to their first league title game since winning
their third straight East Coast Conference title in 1991.
The America East champion will earn an automatic berth into
the NCAA Tournament.
"Today's win was a huge step for the
University of Delaware women's basketball program," said
Delaware fourth-year head coach Tina Martin. "We
struggled in the first half but really played well the final
six minutes. I'm very proud of our kids."
The Blue Hens, who trailed most of the
first half, overcame a 34-32 halftime deficit and took
control of the game at the six minute mark of the second
half. New Hampshire, a 1999 Women's National Invitational
Tournament participant, led for most of the second half
before Delaware forged a 57-57 tie with 6:12 left to
play.
It was all Blue Hens after that as
Delaware reeled off 16 straight points over a five-minute
spurt to go up 72-57 with 1:28 left to play. Johnson, a
first team All-America East selection, scored eight points
and Leyfert, a second team choice for the second straight
year, added four points during the stretch to help Delaware
pull away.
The Hens held off any UNH comeback
attempt by nailing five free throws in the final minute of
play. Delaware shot 52 percent from the field (29 of 56) for
the game, hitting 15 of 26 shots in the second half. The
Wildcats hurt themselves by committing 26
turnovers.
Delaware's win was its first ever at
Patrick Gymnasium after losing 12 straight, all to the host
University of Vermont, including last year's 74-64
quarterfinal playoff loss.
