Chris Campbell, who served as an assistant coach at Marymount University for three seasons, was hired as women’s basketball assistant coach at the University of Delaware in June, 2008. He begins his second season this winter.

Campbell, a 1996 graduate of Duke University, replaced Melissa Dymek, who left the staff in June after four seasons to take an assistant coach position at Akron University. He joins a Delaware staff that includes head coach Tina Martin, Associate Head Coach Jeanine Radice, and Assistant Coach Tiara Malcom.

“We are excited to add Chris to our coaching staff here at the University of Delaware,” said Martin in making the announcement. “He has been associated with winning basketball throughout his career and brings a wealth of experience as a coach and recruiter.”

Born in Mt. Kisco, NY and raised in Potomac, Md., Campbell, 35, was the top assistant at Marymount University the past three seasons under 25-year head coach Bill Finney and served as the team’s recruiting coordinator. He helped lead the Saints to a three-year record of 61-25 and NCAA Division III Tournament appearances in 2006 and 2008. The team won the Capital Athletic Conference title in 2006 and advanced to the title game in both 2007 and 2008.

Marymount, based in Arlington, Va., went 20-9 and advanced to the NCAA Tournament in 2006, posted an 18-10 mark in 2007, and a 23-6 slate this past season when the team returned to the NCAA Tournament. Marymount has captured 10 CAC titles during Finney’s tenure.

While at Marymount, Campbell helped coach four All-CAC players, including three-time all-league selection Stephanie Witko and 2006 CAC Player of the Year and Female Athlete of the Year Randi Jones. In addition into his duties with the basketball team, he also served as head men’s golf coach for two seasons, leading the squad to a fourth place finish at the CAC Championships this past spring.

He graduated from Churchill High School in Potomac, Md., where he was a member of the golf team, and went on to earn his degree in biology from Duke in 1996. He spent seven years on the staff of Young Life and later worked for four years in the Montgomery County (Md.) Public School System.

He began his coaching career as a boy’s soccer assistant at Wilson High School in Washington, DC in 1997 and between 1997-2004 coached six different sports at Wilson and Churchill high schools. As an assistant coach, he led the girl’s basketball team at Churchill to consecutive state titles in 2001 and 2002, helped lead the golf team to two state runner-up finishes, and also coached field hockey and boy’s basketball. In addition, he founded the Metro Stars AAU Girl’s Basketball Program in 2003.

Campbell began his college coaching career at Catholic University in Washington, DC where he served as an assistant women’s basketball coach in 2004-05 under head coach Maggie Lonergan. He helped lead the Cardinals to a share of the CAC regular season title and a berth in the league tournament semifinals. The team won a school-record 14 straight games and had four players reach the 1,000-career point mark during the season.

He is pursuing his master’s degree in teaching from Marymount. He is single and resides in Bear, Del.
