Tina Martin, a former standout player at Lock Haven (Pa.) University and an assistant coach at Seton Hall University for eight seasons, begins her third season at the helm of the Blue Hens this winter. A native of Williamsport, PA, Martin was hired May 14, 1996, replacing Joyce Perry, who resigned to spend more time with her family and pursue other interests. Perry spent 18 seasons at the helm of the Hens, posting a record of 266-212 and three conference titles. Martin, 34, who inherited a team that suffered three straight losing seasons, led her first team to a 9-19 record in her rookie campaign in 1996-97. The Blue Hens went 6-12 in America East play to place seventh overall, downing Boston U . in the league preliminaries before falling to powerful Vermont in the quarterfinals. The Blue Hens finished the year with a 5-6 record over the final 11 games after starting out 4-13. In 1997-98, injuries and youth played a key part in the Blue Hens' 6-21 mark, including a 3-15 record in America East play. The season was highlighted by the play of America East All-Rookie selections Danielle Leyfert and Cindy Johnson. With three starters, two key transfers, and five talented newcomers on this year' squad, Martin thinks that the Blue Hens can make huge strides this season. Martin played a big part in rebuilding a Seton Hall program that went from three straight losing seasons to one that made back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances in 1994 and 1995 under head coach Phyllis Mangina. The 1993-94 team went 27-5 and advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16, the best season in Seton Hall history. A two-time NCAA Division II All-American at Lock Haven, Martin was a four time Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference All-Star and two time league Player of the Year. She finished as the PSAC's all-time leading scorer with 2,157 points and had her number (33) retired at Lock Haven. Martin, who is single and resides in Newark, earned her degree in health, physical education, and recreation from Lock Haven in 1986.
