Former
University of Delaware men's basketball
standout Tyrone Perry will begin
his fourth season with the UD women's
basketball coaching staff in
2004-05.
Perry has
played a big role in Delaware's remarkable
success during his three seasons under
head coach Tina Martin, helping Delaware
win at least 19 games each season and make
two post-season tournament appearances.
Delaware
made it two straight post-season
appearances in 2001-02. As first year
members of the Colonial Athletic
Association, Perry helped guide the Blue
Hens to a 23-7 record, the second highest
season win total in school history.
Delaware
placed second in the CAA regular season
standings behind nationally-ranked Old
Dominion with a 15-3 mark and advanced to
the CAA Tournament semifinals. Delaware
earned its first ever Women's National
Invitational Tournament berth before
falling to Atlantic 10 regular season
champion George Washington in the opening
round, 78-71.
The
remarkable string continued in 2002-03 as
Perry helped lead an unheralded team to a
22-9 record and a 15-3 league mark, tying
Old Dominion for the regular season title.
It marked the first time since 1992-93
that the Lady Monarchs did not win the
league regular season title
outright.
The Hens
moved through the CAA Tournament
before falling to host Old Dominion 66-58
in the championship game. Still, the Hens
qualified for the WNIT Tournament for the
second straight year, falling to host
Saint Joseph's 65-47 in the opening round.
Before
joining the Delaware wome's basketball
staff, Perry served two seasons on the
Blue Hen men's staff, under Mike Brey in
1999-2000 and under new head coach David
Henderson in 2000-01.
In his
second season in 2000-01, Perry played an
integral part for a team that despite
inexperience, posted a 20-10 record,
placed second in the America East regular
season standings with a 14-4 mark, and
advanced to the America East title game
before falling to Hofstra.
Perry
began his coaching career at Delaware
during the 1999-2000 season, serving under
head coach Mike Brey, who is now the head
coach at Notre Dame.
The Blue
Hens posted their third straight
post-season appearance, putting together
an overall record of 24-8, falling to
Hofstra in the America East championship
game, and advancing to the NIT Tournament
for the first time in school
history.
Perry, 26,
helped lead Delaware to back-to-back
America East Championship and NCAA
Tournament bids during an outstanding
playing career as a point guard in
1995-99.
Brey's
first recruit at Delaware, Perry, a 5-11
point guard from Newport News, VA (Warwick
HS) finished his Blue Hen career as the UD
all-time leader in consecutive games
played with 119, which is also a UD record
for games played, and never missed a game
(or a practice) in his career.
He ranks
second all-time in Delaware history with
186 steals, second in three-point field
goals with 170, and had 474 three-point
attempts which ranks second in UD history.
Perry, the
only three time team captain in UD men's
basketball history and a member of two
America East Conference title teams and
two NCAA Tournament qualifiers, also ranks
fourth in UD history with 376 assists.
Perry finished his career averaging 7.9
points per game (936 points), 2.8 rebounds
per game (333 rebounds), and 3.2 assists
per game (376 assists).
He is
single and resides in Newark.
