UD Women's Basketball Nips Towson 69-67 at the
Buzzer
NEWARK, DE -- Sophomore Danielle Leyfert
(Vienna, Va./Oakton) performed late game heroics for the
second game in a row, when she grabbed a missed jumper by
Megan Dellegrotti (Berwick, Pa./Berwick) with three
seconds left and sank the game winning shot with 0.5 seconds
remaining to lift the University of Delaware women's
basketball team (14-7, 8-5) to a 69-67 victory over Towson
(10-11, 5-8) at the Bob Carpenter Center on Saturday.
With the win the Hens clinched their first winning since
1992-93. Leyfert, who scored six points late in the
Northeastern game on Monday to put the Hens up for good
after trailing late in the game, came through again
onSaturday as she hit two free throws with 1:04 left in the
game to tie the score at 67 and then hit the game winning
shot 0.5 seconds left in the game.
Delaware was led by a balanced attack that saw four
players score in double figures. The Hens were led by
Leyfert's 13 points, six rebounds, five steals and four
assists. Cindy Johnson (Far Rockaway, N.Y./August
Martin) also had 13 points as she scored in double figures
for 13th game in a row. Renee Baker (Wilmington,
Del./Padua Academy) also chippped in with 12 points and six
rebounds, while Dellegrotti had 10 points and six rebounds
for the Hens.
The Hens were also led in rebounding by Christina
Rible (Little Silver, N.J.) who had 11 rebounds.
Towson was led by Mylisa Pilione who had 14 points on 4-7
three-point shooting. Shniece Perry had 13 points, nine
rebounds and four assists for the Tigers, while Jess Gordon
had 13 points and six rebounds.
Delaware trailed for the fifth game in a row going into
halftime after Perry hit a halfcourt shot at the buzzer to
put the Tigers up 40-38. The second half was very tightly
contested and saw the Hens lead 61-59 with 6:12 remaining.
Pilione hit a three-pointer with 5:49 left to give Towson a
62-61 lead that would hold up until Leyfert's game winning
shot with .5 seconds lifted Delaware to the win.
Delaware will be in action next Saturday when the Hens
travel to Burlington, Vt. to take on the Catamounts in
Patrick Gymnasium at 1 p.m.
