Delaware 80, American 51 December 17, 2000 Johnson Hits for 24 Points, 8 Assists as Hens Rout Eagles Cindy Johnson NEWARK, DE -- Senior guard Cindy Johnson scored 24 points and dished out a career-high eight assists to lead the University of Delaware to its record 11th straight win at the Bob Carpenter Center with an 80-51 non-league women's basketball victory over American University Sunday afternoon. Johnson (August Martin/Far Rockaway, NY) erupted for 20 points and five assists in the first half alone to stake the Blue Hens (8-3) to a 44-25 halftime lead. American (2-8) lost its fourth straight game despite 12 points from forward Maria Werries and 10 points from forward Jina Lewis. Forward Hollie Steinman added eight points and a team-high 10 rebounds. Delaware junior guard Megan Dellegrotti (Berwick, PA HS) matched a career with 18 points, including four three-pointers, while senior forward Danielle Leyfert (Oakton/Vienna, VA) added 14 points and five assists. Junior forward Christina Rible (Red Bank/Little Silver, NJ) added eight points and pulled 10 rebounds for the Hens. Delaware, which has now won three straight games and six of its last seven outings, shot 62 percent from the field in the first half (18 of 29) to jump out to the 19-point halftime lead and connected on 51 percent of their shots for the game (30 of 59). The Hens' 11 straight home wins is just two shy of the all-time home win streak record of 13 set in 1983-84 when the Blue Hens played home games at the Delaware Field House. American was hurt by 20 turnovers and shot just 29.7 percent from the field (19 of 64), including just 5 of 22 from the three-point line. As has been their custom at home this season, the Blue Hens broke out to a big lead quickly, going up 17-3 following a 12-0 run with 11:37 left in the first half. Johnson scored seven points and dished out three assists in the opening eight minutes to lead the Hens out of the gates. Delaware built on its 19-point halftime lead, going up by as much as 33 points at 65-32 with 13:26 left to play. The Eagles never got closer than 20 points at 67-47 with 5:21 remaining. The Hens will travel to five-time defending Northeast Conference champion St. Francis (Pa.) Dec. 20 before taking a 13-day break.
