December 6, 2000 Blue Hens Go Cold From Field and Fall to Upstart Patriots
FAIRFAX, VA -- George Mason opened the second half on a 29-6 run to break open a close game and cruised to an 89-61 women's basketball non-league victory over the University of Delaware Wednesday night at the Patriot Center. The Blue Hens (5-3) hit just 17 of 60 shots from the field (28 percent) and committed 30 turnovers to see their three-game winning streak snapped. The Hens, atop the America East standings with a 2-0 conference slate, continue conference action this weekend at New Hampshire (Friday) and Maine (Sunday). George Mason (6-1), coming off an 88-68 loss to No. 3 ranked Duke Sunday in a game it led at halftime, had three scorers in doubles figures led by guard Jen Surlas with 20 points, including four three pointers. Guard Jen Derevjanik added 15 points and eight assists while forward Tish Wescott added 14 points and eight rebounds. George Mason dished out 26 assists and posted 15 steals while committing just 18 turnovers. Delaware senior guard Cindy Johnson was the Hens' lone double figure scorer with 10 points. Forward Danielle Leyfert added four points, eight rebounds, and three assists but forward Christina Rible, last week's America East Player of the Week, was held to just three rebounds and just six points on 2 of 13 shooting from the field. The Blue Hens held a 52-39 advantage on the boards as freshman Tracey Howell (A.I. duPont HS) had seven points and seven rebounds. Delaware also continued its hot foul shooting, connecting on 27 of 36 tries. The Patriots led by just six points at halftime at 33-27 but came storming out in the second half, using a 29-6 run to take control of the game.
