Blue Hens Post
Biggest League Road Win in 11 Years vs. Black
Bears

ORONO, ME -- The University of
Delaware women's basketball team continued to roll through
the America East Sunday afternoon as Christina Rible
led four scorers in double figures with 18 points and 12
rebounds to pace the Blue Hens to an 84-59 league victory
over host University of Maine at Alfond Arena.
The Blue Hens (7-3, 4-0) won their 12th
straight America East regular season game and improved to
4-0 in league play for the first time since 1988-89 when
Delaware opened 9-0 as a member of the East Coast
Conference. The 12 straight regular season victories are the
most since 1983-85 when Delaware won 14 straight ECC games.
The 25-point victory was the Hens' largest win margin
against a league team on the road since a 68-43 win over
Lafayette in 1989-90 in the ECC.
Maine (3-5, 1-2), a 2000 NCAA Tournament
participant and for years the top team in America East, lost
to the Hens at home for the second straight year. Lacey
Stone came off the bench to lead the Black Bears with 16
points and eight rebounds while Melissa Heon added 11
points.
Delaware, off to a 7-3 start for the
second straight season, held a commanding 51-34 margin on
the boards and took advantage of 24 Black Bear turnovers.
Rible, who netted her fourth double-double in four league
games this season, was aided by Cindy Johnson who
scored 18 points and pulled six rebounds while Danielle
Leyfert added 16 points, four rebounds, and three
assists and Megan Dellegrotti hit for 16 points,
pulled four rebounds, dished out a team-high six assists,
and hit on 4 of 9 three-pointers. Freshman Tracey Howell
(A.I. duPont HS) came off the bench to deliver nine
points and eight rebounds in just 17 minutes of action. The
Hens converted on all 11 free throws.
"We played very well today," said
Delaware head coach Tina Martin, whose squad swept
the tough New Hampshire-Maine road swing for the first time
since joining the league. "I'm very pleased with our effort
and the great strides we have made with this
win."
Delaware took a 36-28 lead into
intermission and rolled through the second half as the Black
Bears never got closer than 10 points after the first two
minutes of the stanza. The Hens opened the second half with
a 22-6 lead to go up 58-34 with 12:55 left to play and led
by as much as 33 points at 73-40 with 8:01
remaining.
The Hens will return to action Dec. 17
when they host American in a non-league game at the Bob
Carpenter Center.
