COLLEGE PARK, MD -- Marche
Strickland's three-pointer with 15 seconds to play was the
difference as Maryland held off Delaware, 71-70, in the
championship game of the Terrapin Classic at Cole Fieldhouse
Sunday afternoon.
After trailing by as many as 18 midway
through the first half, Delaware led 69-64 with 58 seconds
to play. Two Maryland free throws cut the lead to three with
43 seconds left. Junior guard Allison Trapp was
fouled immediately and connected on the first foul shot.
However, she missed the second and Christina Rible
fouled the Terps' Deedee Warley on the rebound. Warley hit
both of those free throws to make it a 70-68 game with 41
seconds remaining.
Sophomore Carrie Timmins was
fouled to stop the clock with 30 seconds left, but missed
both foul shots. Strickland then came down and nailed her
fifth-three pointer of the afternoon to give the Terps a
one-point lead.
Delaware had two chances to win it. After
the Terps deflected a Delaware pass out of bounds, Blue Hen
senior Danielle Leyfert missed a 10-footer in the
lane with six seconds left. Leyfert got her own rebound and
followed it from the same spot. The shot, however, hit the
back of the rim as time expired.
"It was a great basketball game," said
Delaware coach Tina Martin. "When it started we were
timid. But, as the game wore on, we started playing with
confidence and the way we are capable of
playing."
Delaware, playing without leading
scorer Cindy Johnson who had suffered a sprained
ankle in Saturday's win over Long Beach State, played from
behind early. The Terrapins, 4-0 for the first time since
1991-92, jumped out to a 24-6 lead in the first 10:30. The
run was sparked by Strickland, who scored 10 of the team's
first 14 points and finished with a game-high 23 to earn
Terrapin Classic MVP honors. However, Delaware (2-2) rallied
to cut the deficit to 38-27 by intermission.
The Blue Hens took their first lead of
the game when they scored 10 straight points to turn a seven
point Maryland lead into a 62-59 Delaware advantage with
4:30 to play. Timmins' three-pointer with 5:16 left put
Delaware ahead for the first time, 60-59.
Rible led Delaware with 17 points and
nine rebounds, while Leyfert added 15 points and eight
rebounds. Trapp, making her first start in place of the
injured Johnson, recorded a double-double with 12 points and
10 rebounds and added five assists.
Warley finished the game with 17 points,
shooting just 2 for 10 from the field, but connecting on 13
of 16 at the foul line.
Leyfert and Lindsay Davis were
named to the all-tournament team along with Warley and
Strickland.
Delaware will travel to Princeton
Wednesday for a 7:30 p.m. contest at Jadwin Gym. Johnson,
who had a string of 69 straight starts and 86 consecutive
games played broken on Sunday, is listed as questionable for
that game. Prior to Sunday, she had not missed a start since
January 24, 1998 and had appeared in every game in her
collegiate career.
