BOSTON -- Junior Megan
Dellegrotti (Berwick, PA HS) scored seven of her
career-high 20 points in a 13-0 run to open the second half
as the University of Delaware rallied for a 72-59 America
East women's basketball victory over Boston University
Sunday afternoon at Case Gymnasium.
The Blue Hens (13-3, 7-0 America East)
won their eighth straight game and extended their America
East regular season win streak to 15 games, breaking the
school record of 14 straight wins when UD was a member of
the East Coast Conference in 1983-85. Delaware's 7-0 start
in league play is the best since a 9-0 start in 1988-89 in
the East Coast Conference.
Boston University, which lost its fourth
straight game, fell to 5-10 (2-4) and lost to the Blue Hens
for the sixth straight time and for the 11th time in the
last 12 meetings. Freshman Katie Terhune had 13 points,
seven rebounds, and five assists while Marisa Moseley added
13 points and Alison Argentieri came off the bench to score
10 points.
Danielle Leyfert added 15 points
for the Blue Hens while Christina Rible had 14 points
and 10 rebounds for her sixth double-double in seven league
games this season. Leading scorer Cindy Johnson (19.2
ppg) was held to just 11 points. Dellegrotti, who hit 3 of 5
three-pointers and also had six rebounds and four assists,
surpassed her previous high of 18 points two other
times.
"Boston University came out with a lot of
pressure in the first half and we didn't handle it well,"
said Delaware head coach Tina Martin. "At halftime we
made some adjustments and just came out and executed better
in the second half."
Boston University jumped out to a 29-21
halftime lead as the Hens struggled coming out of the gates,
hitting just eight field goals and committing 14 turnovers
in the opening stanza.
The second half was a completely
different story for the Hens. Delaware opened the half on a
13-0 run as Dellegrotti netted seven points and the Hens
held the Terriers scoreless for the first three and a half
minutes. By that time, Delaware held a 34-29 lead and would
never trail again. Delaware turned the ball over just three
times in the second half and hit on 17 of 32 shots from the
field (.531).
Boston University did cut the deficit to
40-38 with 12:24 left to play, but the Hens answered again
with a 6-0 run to go back up 46-38 10:40 left. The Terriers
never got closer than six the remainder of the
contest.
Delaware will return to action next
Saturday when it travels to last place Towson (1-14, 1-6)
for a 5:30 p.m. tip-off at the Towson Center.
