NEWARK, DE -- Senior forward
Danielle Leyfert scored a season-high 21 points and
matched a career-high with 15 rebounds as the University of
Delaware won its 10th straight game and set a school record
for consecutive home wins with a 73-53 America East women's
basketball victory over Maine Thursday night at the Bob
Carpenter Center.
Leyfert connected on 12 of 17 free throws
to lead four players in double figure scoring as the Blue
Hens (15-3, 9-0) tied a school record with their 13th
straight home win and downed the Black Bears (6-12, 3-6) for
the first time ever at home after nine straight losses. The
Hens tied the school record for consecutive home wins set in
1983-84 and the team's 9-0 start in league play matches the
school record set by the 1988-89 team when Delaware was a
member of the East Coast Conference.
The Black Bears, who have now lost to the
Hens in three of the last four meetings, including a 84-59
loss in Orono, ME back on Dec. 10, were the last team to
beat Delaware at home, downing Delaware 73-58 back on Jan.
4, 2000.
Senior guard Cindy Johnson added
18 points, junior forward Christina Rible added 11 points
and 12 rebounds, and Lindsay Davis came off the bench
to add 11 points as the Blue Hens overcame 32.3 percent
shooting (21 of 65) from the field.
Maine, which had a two-game win streak
snapped, got a huge effort from freshman center Heather
Ernest who scored 25 points and tied a Bob Carpenter Center
record with 19 rebounds for her league-leading 12th
double-double of the season. Maine also got 10 points from
guard Lacey Stone. The Black Bears, who committed 24
turnovers, shot just 28.6 percent from the field (16 of 56)
for the game and just 16 percent (4 of 25) in the second
half.
Maine jumped out to a 18-9 lead in the
first eight minutes of the game, but Delaware responded with
a 16-4 run and never trailed again. Delaware held a 37-31
lead at halftime but could not pull away from the Black
Bears until the final minutes of the game.
Maine pulled to within six points at
55-49 with 4:12 on an Ernest free throw, but the Hens
responded by making their final 14 free throws to ice the
win. In all, the Blue Hens converted on 30 of 39 shots from
the line, including 20 of 24 in the second half.
