Blue Hens Deadly at the Line To Improve Win Streak to Seven

Christine Cole Scored a Career-High 12 Points

BOSTON -- The University of Delaware women's basketball squad continued to cruise through America East conference play as Cindy Johnson scored a game-high 21 points to lead the Blue Hens to a 75-64 women's basketball victory over Northeastern Friday night at Cabot Gymnasium.

The Blue Hens (12-3, 6-0 America East) ran their win streak to seven games and extended their league regular season win streak to a school record tying 14 with the victory. Danielle Leyfert and Megan Dellegrotti each scored 13 points and pulled seven rebounds and Christine Cole netted a career-high 12 points to go with seven rebounds in the win. Dellegrotti also dished out six assists.

The 14 straight league wins ties the UD record of 14 set in 1983-85 when Delaware was a member of the East Coast Conference. The Hens' 6-0 start in league play is the best ever since joining America East in 1991-92 and best since starting out 9-0 in the East Coast Conference in 1988-89.

"The was a very good road win in the conference for us tonight," said Delaware head coach Tina Martin. "We held our composure in the second half when Northeastern made a couple of runs at us. I was very pleased with our foul shooting which allowed us to build on the lead."

Northeastern (7-7, 3-2) shot just 39.7 percent from the field (23 of 58) and was hampered by 23 turnovers in suffering the loss. Joi Jefferson came off the bench to score a team-high 18 points and pull seven rebounds while Kiarsha Curtis added 12 points, Melissa Kowalski scored 10, and Lani Lawrence had seven points and a game-high 13 rebounds before fouling out with 1:09 left to play.

Delaware trailed 29-22 with 4:18 left in the first half but exploded on a 16-0 run, scoring the last 14 points of the half to take a 34-29 lead into intermission. The Hens then scored the first basket of the second half to go up 40-29.

Northeastern never got closer than five points the entire second half when the Huskies cut the lead to 42-37 with 14:53 left to play. The Hens, who led by as much as 17 points at 66-49 with 6:04 left, never let the Huskies back in the game as they were nearly flawless at the foul line, converting 25 of 28 tries for the game, including 22 of 25 in the second half. Leyfert hit on 11 of 12 from the charity stripe.

The Hens will travel crosstown to take on Boston University Sunday at 1 p.m. at Case Gym.
