January 20, 2001 Dellegrotti Leads Hens with 19 Points, Clutch Foul Shooting
TOWSON, MD -- Junior guard Megan Dellegrotti led four University of Delaware scorers in double figures with 19 points and junior forward Christina Rible had 12 points and 12 rebounds as the Blue Hens won their ninth straight game with a 74-59 America East women's basketball victory over host Towson at the Towson Center Saturday evening. Dellegrotti (Berwick, PA HS), coming off a career-high 20 points in a win over Boston University in the Hens' last outing Sunday, hit on 4 of 5 shots from the field, connected on both three-point tries, and hit on 9 of 10 free throws vs. Towson to lead the Blue Hens. Delaware has now won seven straight road games this season. Delaware (14-3, 8-0 America East) remained atop the league standings as the Hens extended a school record with their 16th straight regular season league game since last season. The Hens' 8-0 start in league play is just one win shy of the best conference start in school history when Delaware started 9-0 in the East Coast Conference. Towson, which got a career-high 24 points from Jill McGowan and 12 points off the bench from Faith Jones, remained in last place in America East, falling to 1-15, 1-7. Rible (Red Bank Regional/Little Silver, NJ) posted her seventh double-double in eight league games this season while senior forward Danielle Leyfert added 14 points and eight rebounds and senior guard Cindy Johnson added 10 points and six rebounds. The Hens shot 53.8 percent from the field in the opening half (14 of 26) to jump out to a 34-21 lead at intermission as Leyfert scored 12 of her 14 points. Delaware, which won at the Towson Center after three straight losses, built the lead to as much as 19 points at 59-40 with 9:13 left to play. Towson cut the lead to eight points at 65-57 with 1:59 left, but Rible followed with a layup and Dellegrotti converted five free throws in the final 1:10. The Hens helped themselves by converting 24 of 30 free throws while taking advantage of ice-cold shooting by Towson. The Tigers hit just 32.8 percent of their shots from the field, connecting on 19 of 58 shots, including just 6 of 23 in the opening 20 minutes.
