GREENSBORO, NC -- Megan Dellegrotti scored the final six points of the game to break a 56-56 tie as University of Delaware topped Liberty University, 62-56, in women's basketball action Friday night. "Liberty is an NCAA Tournament calibre squad. We fought and fought all night, and executed when we needed to. We stepped up and did the things we needed to win. It was a total team effort." Dellegrotti finished with 16 points to compliment Christina Rible's game-high 18 points, including the first 10 Delaware points of the game. Freshman Julie Sailer added 14 points in her first collegiate game for Delaware. The Blue Hens jumped all over the Flames (1-3) early and moved out to a 21-9 lead. The Blue Hens held on for a 31-22 lead at intermission before Liberty made a run in the second half. The defending Big South Conference champions closed to within two at 41-39 on a three-pointer by Daina Stagaitiene. Liberty took a 52-51 lead with 4:40 remaining when Rachel Young knocked down a three-pointer. However, a bucket by Sailer with 4:11 left gave Delaware the lead right back. Liberty tied the game, 56-56, with 1:17 left on Crystal Peace's bucket. However, Dellegrotti knocked down a three-pointer with 51 seconds left to give Delaware a 59-56 lead. After Susan Foreid missed a three-pointer, Dellegrotti chased down the rebound and was fouled. She made two free throws with 25 seconds to give Delaware a comfortable five-point lead. Stagaitiene and Michelle Fricke each finished with 11 points to lead Liberty. The Blue Hens will face the winner of the Canisius-UNC Greensboro game Saturday at 4 p.m. However, they will do it without the services of starting backcourt mates Allison Trapp and Dellegrotti. Trapp suffered a high-ankle sprain in the opening minute and could miss the next two weeks. Dellegrotti has been given permission to return home to Pennsylvania to attend to a death in the family.
