Old Dominion Snaps Blue Hens' Nine-Game Win Streak

Allison Trapp was the Hens' lone double figure scorer with 17

NORFOLK, VA -- The University of Delaware women's basketball squad had its nine-game winning streak halted Sunday afternoon as forward Lucienne Berthieu scored 19 points and guard Monique Coker added 15 points and a game-high 10 rebounds to lead No. 20 ranked Old Dominion to an easy 72-45 Colonial Athletic Association victory at the ODU Fieldhouse.

League-leading Old Dominion (17-5, 13-0 CAA) raced to its 10th straight win and extended its two-year conference winning streak to 20 games by holding the second place Blue Hens without a field goal for a span of 11 minutes and 15 seconds between the first and second halves.

Delaware (17-5, 10-3 CAA) had its second significant win streak of the season snapped by the Monarchs. Old Dominion ended Delaware's three-year 22-game home winning streak with an 82-55 victory back on Jan. 11. The loss Sunday was the Hens' first since that setback on Jan. 11, snapping a winning streak of nine games. The Hens remain in sole possession of second place in the league standings with five games left despite loss.

Berthieu, the CAA Player of the Year in both 1999 and 2000, hit on 8 of 10 shots from the field for her 19 points and also added six rebounds. Coker hit on 7 of 15 shots from the field and also added 10 rebounds and two assists. ODU point guard Sharron Francis added nine points, nine assists, and six steals on the day. The Monarchs forced 26 Delaware turnovers, held a 38-29 advantage on the boards, and held the Hens to just 32.6 percent shooting from the field (14 of 43).

Junior guard Allison Trapp led the Blue Hens with 17 points, reaching double figures for the 12th straight game. But she was the team's lone scorer in double figures as the other four UD starters managed a combined 10 points. Julie Sailer added seven points and team highs of six rebounds and two assists off the bench. Delaware's leading scorer and playmaker, senior guard Megan Dellegrotti (14.2 ppg, 4.0 apg), was held to just four points and no assists.

"Old Dominion came out very physical in the first half and showed why they are a Top 20 team," said Delaware head coach Tina Martin. "They are better than a No. 20 team and I'm sure they will prove that when NCAA Tournament times comes around. We backed down when they got physical and that hurt us. We'll learn from this experience."

Delaware, which lost just its third conference game over the last two seasons, managed just six field goals in the opening half as the Hens fell behind 20-5 in the opening seven minutes and could never make up ground. The Hens scored their final field goal of the first half on a Dellegrotti layup with 1:48 left and went into intermission down 40-20.

The Monarchs did not let up in the second half, outscoring the Hens 20-4 to go up 60-24 with 10:53 left in the game. When Delaware's Christina Rible converted a field goal with 10:33 remaining, it ended a drought of 11:15 without a field goal. The Hens scored just seven free throws during the span.

Delaware will look to get back on the winning track Feb. 14 when the Hens host CAA foe Drexel for the team's sixth home game in the last seven outings.
