Trapp Explodes for
34 as Hens Win CAA Opener
HEMPSTEAD, NY -- University of
Delaware senior guard Allison Trapp (West
Catholic/Philadelphia, PA) enjoyed an outstanding day,
scoring a career-high 34 points, including 19 straight for
her team at one point and hitting on her final 12 field goal
attempts, as the Blue Hen women's basketball team opened
Colonial Athletic Association play with an 80-69 win over
Hofstra Sunday afternoon at Hofstra Arena.

The Blue Hens (6-3, 1-0 CAA), who
extended their winning streak to six games, won their third
straight conference opener and downed Hofstra (3-7, 0-1) for
the sixth straight time as they broke out to an 11-point
halftime lead and held off a late Pride surge for the
victory.
Trapp, the Most Valuable Player at last
week's Dartmouth College Tournament and the Hens' leading
scorer this season at 16.8 points per game, hit on 14 of 16
shots from the field for the game, nailing each of her final
12 field goal attempts, breaking the school record of 11
straight field goals made by Karen Mulligan over two
games during the 1998-99 season.
After missing a three-pointer with 2:28
left in the first half, she proceeded to hit her final three
field goal attempts of the opening stanza and on all nine of
her second half attempts. At one point, she scored
Delaware's final six points of the first half and each of
the team's first 13 points in the second half.
Trapp eclipsed the 20-point mark for the
fourth time in the last six games and her 34 points were the
second highest single game total in school history. She also
tied a school record for points in a conference game,
matching the 34-point mark by Danielle Leyfert vs.
Northeastern Feb. 19, 1998 and her 34 points also tied the
Hofstra Arena record set by Maine's Jamie Cassidy Jan. 23,
2000.
Delaware is now 41-4 over the last three
seasons in league play. Tiara Malcom added 15 points
and nine rebounds for the Blue Hens and Christine
Cole added nine points, hitting all seven of her free
throw attempts, while pulling six rebounds.
"Every team wants to defend its home
court and this was a typical CAA battle," said Delaware head
coach Tina Martin. "Today's game was physical and we
were fortunate that we executed when we needed to. We got
the rebounds we needed and Trapp just had a huge game for
us. We're happy to leave here with a win."
Hofstra guard Jen Brickey, the CAA's
leading scorer at over 20 points per game, hit on 12 of 27
shots from the field and converted three three-pointers for
32 points and added nine rebounds and two assists. Forward
Amaka Agugua added 16 points and nine rebounds for the
Pride.
Hofstra controlled much of the first half
and led by four at 19-15 after Brickey hit a jumper with
12:10 left before intermission. But Delaware rallied back to
tie and took the lead for good thanks to a 9-0 run that put
them up 30-23 with 2:54 left in the half. Hofstra went
scoreless for almost five minutes before Lauren Hall-Gregory
converted a jumper with 2:42 left.
Trapp then took over, scoring the last
six points of the half for a 38-27 Delaware lead and staying
hot by scoring the first 13 points of the second half for UD
as the Hens built a 51-41 lead with 13:22 left in the
game.
Delaware upped the lead to as much as 16
points with 7:24 left to play when Tracey Howell
capped a 5-0 Delaware run for a 62-46 lead. The Pride stayed
close and used an 8-0 run, including two three-pointers from
Brickey, to cut the margin back to seven at 66-59 with 4:28
remaining. Delaware answered with 6-0 run of its own, capped
by a Carrie Timmins jumper with 1:52 left for a 72-59
lead, and Hofstra never got closer than eight the rest of
the way.
