Colonial Athletic Association Finals Old Dominion 66, Delaware 58 March 15, 2003 Blue Hens Fall Just Short in CAA Title Quest Allison Trapp scored a game-high 28 points and was named to the All-Tournament team NORFOLK, VA -- The University of Delaware women's basketball squad's dream of a first ever Colonial Athletic Association title and a return trip to the NCAA Tournament were burst by host Old Dominion as the Blue Hens lost a hard-fought 66-58 decision in the CAA Tournament Championship game Saturday at the Constant Convocation Center. The Blue Hens, who hung tough with the Monarchs and cut the lead to one point several times in the final 10 minutes, had a six-game win streak snapped to fall to 22-8 on the season. Although Delaware is not expected to earn an NCAA Tournament at-large berth, the Hens hold a good chance of earning a spot in the Women's National Invitation Tournament for the second straight year. Those 32 bids will be extended following the NCAA selection Sunday evening. Old Dominion (21-10), which got 25 points from Tournament Most Valuable Player Shareese Grant and 14 points from forward Monique Coker, won its 12th straight CAA Tournament title and improved to 35-0 all-time in CAA post-season action. The Monarchs also won their 108th straight home game against a conference opponent. The Monarchs also extended their winning streak to 10 games heading into the NCAA Tournament. Delaware received another outstanding effort from senior Allison Trapp who recorded a game-high 28 points, connecting on seven of nine shots from the field and a perfect 12 for 12 from the foul line for her 10th 20-point effort of the season. The first team All-CAA player and the CAA Co-Defensive Player of the Year, also went over the 1,000 point plateau in her three-year career at Delaware during the game, becoming just the 18th Blue Hen to accomplish the feat. Tiara Malcom added 12 points and seven rebounds and Christine Cole chipped in with seven points and five boards. "It was a great game, we played with tremendous heart," said Delaware head coach Tina Martin. "We, as well as OldDominion, proved that we are the two best teams in the conference. They also played with a lot of energy and a lot of heart. You have got to attack and to ODU's credit, they were getting some shots and some steals. We are trying to get our kids to focus on the next game, at the least the NIT. Allison Trapp was one of the top players on the floor. She has stepped up for us. I'm was very proud of her today." The Blue Hens, who previously won conference titles in the East Coast Conference in 1989, 1990, and 1991 and in the America East conference in 2001, lost a league title game for the first time since falling to Lehigh in the ECC finals in 1985-86. Old Dominion jumped out to a 29-28 halftime lead in a stanza which featured five ties with no leader big than five. The Monarchs extended their lead to its biggest margin at 10 points when Coker converted consecutive layups for a 47-37 lead with 10:25 left. But Delaware chipped away at the lead and pulled to within 51-50 on a Trapp three-pointer with 5:03. The Hens cut the lead to one point two more times, the second time at 57-56 when Trapp converted two free throws with 1:39 left. Grant then hit the key shot of the game when, with the shot clock running down, she nailed a three-pointer from the corner to up the ODU lead to 60-56 with 1:10 left. The three-pointer was the only made by the Monarchs the entire game. Grant then followed with two free throws 20 seconds later for a 62-56 lead and Okeisha Howard (11 points, eight assists) hit two more from the foul line in the closing seconds to ice the win. Delaware hit on 20 of 27 shots from the foul line but were hurt by 39.1 percent shooting from the field (18 of 46). Old Dominion shot 50.9 percent (27 of 53) and held a 33-27 advantage on the boards. Grant was joined on the All-Tournament team by teammates Howard and Corinna Turner, Delaware's Trapp and Malcom, and Nadine Morgan of James Madison.
