UNC Wilmington 56, Delaware 49 January 12, 2003 Seahawks Snap Delaware's Seven-Game Win Streak NEWARK, DE -- The University of Delaware women's basketball squad had two long winning streaks snapped Sunday as guard Jennifer Kapper scored a team-high 20 points to lead UNC Wilmington to a 56-49 Colonial Athletic Association victory over the Blue Hens at the Bob Carpenter Center. Allison Trapp (3) led the Blue Hens with 20 points Delaware (7-4, 2-1 CAA) shot just 32.8 percent from the field and committed 19 turnovers as the Blue Hens saw their seven-game winning streak and 11-game home winning streak come to an end. UNC Wilmington, which knocked the Hens out of last year's CAA Tournament semifinals, won its second straight to improve to 10-2, 3-1 CAA. Allison Trapp scored a game-high 22 points, her sixth 20-point effort in the last eight games, Tiara Malcom contributed 11 points and 11 rebounds, and Christine Cole added 13 rebounds to lead the Blue Hens. Center Shameka Montgomery added 13 points, Cherie Lea chipped in with 11 points and nine rebounds, and Rachel Wojdowski came off the bench to score eight points and pull a team-high 10 rebounds, nine in the second half, for the Seahawks. The Blue Hens, who had won each of their last seven games by 10 or more points, lost for the first time since a 58-43 setback at Manhattan Nov. 30. The loss also snapped an 11-game home winning streak for the Hens, who lost at the BCC for the first time since an 82-55 setback to 25th-ranked Old Dominion Jan. 11, 2002. The Hens lost at home for just the fifth time (49-5) over the last four seasons. UNC Wilmington jumped out to a 12-2 lead in the first eight minutes of action before the Blue Hens settled down. Malcom, who scored all 11 of her points in the first half, hit on two field goals in the final 1:27 of the stanza, including a jumper with nine seconds remaining, that sent the game tied at 28-28 heading into intermission. Delaware took its first lead of the game just over a minute into the second half as Julie Sailer hit a layup and followed with two free throws for a 32-28 advantage. But the Hens' shooting went ice-cold as Delaware missed on its next six shots and UNC Wilmington used a 10-0 run to reclaim the lead for good at 38-32. The Blue Hens got back close several times but could never quite get over the top the rest of the game. A jumper by Sailer pulled the Hens to within 44-43 with 9:18 left, but Kapper and Lea scored the games only baskets over the next 3:46 to bu UNCW back up 48-43 with 5:32 remaining. After two free throws by Lea gave the Seahawks their biggest second half lead at 52-45 with 1:17 remaining, the Hens fought back as Juliette Warren connected on a layup and Trapp converted two free throws to cut the lead to 52-49 with 31 seconds remaining. But Kapper, UNC Wilmington's leading scorer at 12.1 points per game, iced the victory as she hit on all four free throw attempts in the final 30 seconds to clinch the victory. Delaware, which shot just 26.7 percent from the field (8 of 30) in the second half, missed on all five three-point attempts in the final 1:21 of the game.
